Rainy Daze

It's been raining a lot through this late spring/early summer... well... a LOT for Saskatoon...

We've tried to not let it dampen our spirits.

I'd be lying if I said we didn't, from time to time, say: "Screw it, I've had enough of this riding in the rain rubbish. Let's not go anywhere today..."

What a Weekend!?

We started off the weekend with a ride over to campus for Keira's ballet lesson. Then we had to haul our butts over to massey Park for the first Saskatoon Kidical Mass ride of the year...

Pretty good turn out for the first ride of the year - with minimal promotion...

Finnegan chatting with Ian

I was going to make a comment about out new rider... but technically she was riding last year - she was just still inside her mom's tummy! What is brand new is that long haul cargo bike - which Duane just finished assembling before the ride (his hands were still dirty when he arrived!)

Duane was also riding his fancy new polo bike.

Beautiful day for a kidical mass!

24 hours later however...

... we were heading out to the kids Irish Dance class in the snow!?

Considering how mild this past winter was.... it's odd that there's been so many last season snow storms...!?

Unexpected Encounter (of the Happy Kind!)

As I was riding home from the Cycling Advisory Group meeting downtown I happened to run into Amanda and the kids heading out for swim lessons....

The kids seemed pretty excited to have had a chance encounter with dad out and about on the paths.

I love these sort of chance encounters - not just with family but other people I know... I run into people I know walking or riding places... and I never cease to marvel at that and how it just never, ever happened during that brief period when we owned an automobile (we did own one - or two - at one point... long, long ago...).

Keira just seems to be excited to be finally riding the Trailer Bike - she wanted to ride it all last summer (as Finnegan had moved on to his own bike), but her legs were just too short.

After a quick smile and wave and hello, off they went to their lessons and off I went home...

(Less happy was the moment when Amamda phoned me from campus to tell me Finnegan had just locked up his bike to hers and then realized that he didn't have his key with him and I'd have to ride over there and meet them to unlock his bike after swim class... at least it wasn't raining... )

Ice Cycle 2012

That time of year again....

Last year it was -40°C (with the wind chill). The year before a balmy -33°C... This year...? Melting... I was wearing shorts and sweating my ass off...

Ah well... Not going to complain too much about that!

Here's a few pics of the event:

That's Amanda smiling in the lower right. Behind her is Don from the city's Infrastructure Services department - who build our roads and plan our bike routes.

Amanda took this picture of me and the kids (on the right, in red)

Heading by the Bessborough Hotel

There was apparently 180 riders this year (strangely same as last year - when it was -40°C!?)

First Snow

We had our first snow last Sunday. It wasn't all that cold - hovering around 0°C - which meant teh wet snow was quickly packed down into ice by cars on teh road and feet on the pathways. It was a bit of a scramble to the the Schwalbe Ice Spikers back on the Yuba.

Amanda got a few pictures of us as we loaded up and rolled off to Irish dance class...

It's not so much the snow and cold and ice that I dislike about winter, it's all the extra junk to deal with when we get to a destination. Where in the summer when we get somewhere we have to carry three helmets and a couple pairs of cycling gloves and sunglasses - we now have to deal with three helmets, three helmet liners, three pairs of mittens and sunglasses, two parkas, two pairs of snow pants, two fleece jackets, my jackets, three pairs of winter boots, scarves and other sundry items... ugh...

And while the snow and ice does slow me down a bit... the time spent gearing up for every trip outside adds far more to the travel time.

Ah well... it's fun once we get going...
