It's been raining a lot through this late spring/early summer... well... a LOT for Saskatoon...
We've tried to not let it dampen our spirits.
I'd be lying if I said we didn't, from time to time, say: "Screw it, I've had enough of this riding in the rain rubbish. Let's not go anywhere today..."

Wettest UK summer since records began in 193'something apparently... you are not alone....!
ReplyDeleteLots of rain in Alberta here also. Which has made me realize my cycling gear for rain is grossly inadequate, especially shoes. What type of shoes do you use for wet weather?
ReplyDeleteI tend to go low-budget and avoid fancy cycling gear, but may need to break open the wallet for at least some decent shoes for wet weather.
My current method is running shoes with a change of socks and shoes at the office, usually the shoes dry before I have to return home. This works fine when it almost never rains, but this spring has changed the "almost never".
Is the change-of-shoes-and-socks method inevitable regardless of shoe type? It would be nice to be somewhat dry for short trips (i.e. grocery store) when I don't feel like dragging a change of clothes along.
I more or less accept that if i bike in the rain I'm going to get wet... whether from the rain or from sweat... wet.
ReplyDeleteI take along extra socks if I'm going to be someplace long enough that standing around in wet socks is going to get annoying. While I generally shun "technical" clothing I've actually purchased some climbing pants made of some synthetic material that dry fairly quickly.
Other than that, big ol' yellow rain jacket for when it gets wet and cold enough. If I lived somewhere where it consistently rains a lot more I'd probably have some different strategies.
Prairie, you and me both on the wet feet issue... I've never found a satisfactory way of keeping them dry... I've got spare socks at work but there's nothing worse than having to put cold damp shoes and socks on at the end of the day..... tried overshoes - faff to get on... tried carrier bags over feet, you look like a numpty... tried wellingtons, can't cycle easily.... in summer I just wear Crocs, but winter is unresolvable..
ReplyDeleteI tried gore-tex socks once. ONCE. The rain ran down my leg and into the socks and after my ride I emptied about a litre out of water each!?
ReplyDelete:o))
ReplyDeleteI did think of trying waterproof socks - I saw them at a Boat Show a couple of years ago but wondered if the problem would be the same as yours!
